Covet: Balancing Blocks

Leave it to the gifted man at Man Make Home to turn me on to something I definitely don't need but absolutely want... perhaps an afternoon or two with these balancing blocks will cure me of my constant topsy-turvy-ness.... or perhaps not.

Distraction: Maine

Sometimes all it takes is a day trip antiquing in Maine with friends to clear the late-winter muck out of this wandering eye.... of course, it also helps to visit a favorite vintage shop: dark wood, smell of sawdust, amazing bins of hardware, shelves of weathered tools, walls covered with frames hung at odd angles and a proprietor with shiny white hair slicked back in a perfect modified pompadour....

Favorites: Montgomery Clift

At the impressionable age of 12 I found this book at my local library's annual basement book sale.  I had no idea who Montgomery Clift was but there was something about the name and, of course, the cover image that caught my pre-teen wandering eye.  I imagine my father raised an eyebrow of concern as we drove home that day.... he with his box of newly purchased used books in the trunk and me in the passenger seat with a Monty Clift biography on my lap.... and, even though it would be several years before I saw one of his films, this book made Montgomery Clift one of my all time favorites.

Covet: Chesterfield Sofa

As much as I love the idea of a worn leather club chair.... the kind imbued with the scent of tobacco and bourbon and manly colognes, the perfectly crackled surface trimmed with tarnished brass nail heads....the kind of chair made for hunkering down with a good book in the library... I'd much rather have a worn leather Chesterfield for all the same reasons and (most importantly) space for my plus one.

Crave: LHOTP

Blame it on my current (as in this morning) desire for a more simplified lifestyle but lately I've been in a LHOTP state of mind.... by that I mean Little House on the Prairie of course.  As a child I devoured all the books of Laura Ingalls Wilder and my wee wandering eyes were completely seduced by the illustrations of Garth Williams....I imagined a world of hay rides, cozy log cabins and tiny floral Calico prints.  Of course, my wee self would have had a hard time parting with roller skates, turntables and fast food but there is a certain appeal and charm to the simple LHOTP life....fortunately, it's never too late to don a bonnet and circle the wagons.
Covered wagon available here.

Rhyme nor Reason: But what about....?

A fragment of vintage needlework for the chronically self-involved.

Covet: Arrow Table

Seeing as I am such a big fan of Cupid and all his deliciously naughty, heart-string-strumming ways, how could I resist this oh-so-subtle table perfect for holding a big bowl of shiny red apples.....bit of archery on the back lawn anyone?

Rhyme nor Reason: Italian Carved Marble Vase

Here at Wandering Eye HQ we would never dream of declaring ourselves arbiters of good taste....Taste?  Yes.  Good?  No.  Which would explain why we think this bit of Italian carved marble from the second half of the 19th century leans so far towards bad that it swings all the way back around to good.

Wishful Wandering: Musee du Quai Branly

Time to locate that invisible plane and pack my luggage with very visible travel ensembles because I'm heading back across the pond and landing right in front of the Musee du Quai Branly for L'Orient des Femmes....an exhibition of 150 traditional costumes assembled by the incredible eye of Christian Lacroix who, to this wandering eye, can do no wrong.

Rhyme nor Reason: Vogue 1946

I flipped when I spied the colors and layout of this VOGUE beauty issue cover featuring photography by the great Irving Penn.... though I'm not a fan of the creepy doll head with bad hair...

My Future Home: Grand Piano

Even though my inner Liberace never quite blossomed after a painful pre-teen year of piano lessons, I can still manage an energetic rendition of chopsticks which is why my future home will feature a grand piano just like this...

Favorites: Ayumi Horie

I have admired the work of Ayumi Horie for some time.... in fact her whimsical mugs often hold my morning coffee which, in my world, is a most important task.  Now, the talented potter is organizing an online auction called Handmade for Japan with all the proceeds going to support relief efforts in Japan...talented and charitable?  A winning combination for sure.

My Future Home: Bar Cart

My future home will be well equipped with a bar cart (or two)....something on wheels for extra portability....attractive and functional like this 1950's design by Arthur Umanoff.  My assortment of bar carts will be strategically stationed within easy reach (or lunge) and well stocked at all times or else the hired help will be in BIG trouble.

If I Were A Girl: Etro F2011

When it comes to fashion, my inner girl has quite the discerning eye so it is rather rare that a collection has her ready to loosen the purse strings for almost every outfit.  This collection by Veronica Etro with it's wonderfully mad patterns and delicious colors is a fashion rarity indeed.... worthy of the most photos I've ever included in one post.... my inner girl can be quite demanding.

Covet: Pembrokeshire Rug

I'll blame the pending change of seasons and my desire for a deep spring cleaning for my rather covetous mood of late.  Next on my list of wants to freshen up the abode...this lovely rug made by the oldest working woolen mill in Pembrokeshire.

Royal formality and a generous dollop of naivete rendered in a most soothing glaze of blues.  I would gladly re-arrange the sideboard (yet again) to make room for these!

Distraction: Scrapbook

I've a weakness for old photo albums and scrapbooks.... the yellowed pages, the curled edge of a pasted down clipping, the annotations in careful script and the telling ways in which the maker juxtaposed elements and created each layout.... these lovely examples are from the scrapbooks of one Barbara Johnson (1738-1825) who began pasting in swatches at age 8 and continued into her eighties.

If I Were A Girl: Emanuel Ungaro F2011

Every fashion season my inner girl sees a color combination that gets her heart all a twitter and these pieces by Giles Deacon for Emanuel Ungaro got the ol' ticker pittering and pattering.  With my shapely gams, I'm partial to the shorter frock but I'd make room in my closet for the floor length as well... if I were a girl.

Library: Etcetera by Sibella Court

Whenever I fear that my rather acute hunting and gathering skills have gotten the best of me, I turn to the beautiful pages of Etcetera where stylist, designer and shopkeeper Sibella Court not only celebrates the desire to collect, she downright encourages it.....and, after I have perused every tempting photo (see above), I can convince myself that, no, I am not a hoarder I am simply a very active collector...phew.

Rhyme nor Reason: Calligraphy

When it comes to texting we at Wandering Eye are embarrassed to admit that, yes, we do partake in the occasional abbreviation....2 b or not 2 b....none the less, when it comes to the all important form of written communication, executed in our best India ink calligraphy of course, we will always remember to dot our i's and cross our t's and add a bit of flourish....
