Favorites: Handblocks





Once upon a time, at a place called UCLA, I studied surface design which means I spent many a late night in the studio jacked up on caffeine, obsessively carving linoleum blocks and printing on yards and yards of fabric.... this would explain why I have a soft spot for block printed fabrics and the tools used to create them....like these late 1800's beauties from the Zucchi Collection of Antique Handblocks.

They are very interesting and not an area of design I am very familiar with. I'm going to spend some time on that site!

I too have a very soft spot for hand-blocked textiles and papers. I have some forty-year old memo samples of documentary English hand-blocks and the are some of my most valued possessions. I particularly like the backs of these fabrics - sometimes, and quite serendipitously, they are like impressionist paintings.
